Standing at nearly 30 ft. tall with a 35 ft. wingspan, inner spinning merry-go-round seats (safety belted of course), springs, lights, monkey bars, dance platforms and...ACTION! Fun for the kid in all of us, it has supported as many as 21 riders at a time...yes...that's right, 21 and has a calculated maximum of 26.
The Yee-Saw is the love child of playground equipment everywhere that has outgrown the schoolyard and matured to cast glowing smiles on children and adults alike. Made out of wood, metal and sweat, this machine will launch you into the heavens and bring you back down safely again and again.
So, why DID we build this crazy, catapulting contraption?
No, it was not to follow a dream of being a carny...although that unplanned goal has been fulfilled. Nor was it a desire to convert it into a trebuchet for waging war on our neighbors. The real driving force was an intense desire to bring a community together, by breaking through everyday normality and harnessing the power of our collective imagination. Volunteers from around the Houston region and beyond came together driven by the desire to create something intensely exciting, different and never before tried.
The machine represents the yin and the yang in all of us. Only through collaboration and cooperation can the forces remain balanced to keep the Yee-Saw in optimum motion. The lasting smiles on all that have experienced it, either by riding or watching the insuppressible giggles of others, is the greatest return on investment imaginable.
How does it work?
Despite its size, two people can easily operate the machine like an ordinary seesaw. Or, just one daredevil can climb to the very top and ride solo with help only from gravity and physics – a seriously cool way to experience it.
This seesaw balances an entire playground within its dominion. A triangular truss braces the seesaw beam and allows riders additional perches to ride.
Above the pivot point there is a fixed, center platform that provides a place to dance. A center level rises through the dance platform and moves with the seesaw. Dancers can use this pole to operate the machine and enjoy having control over the riders’ experience.
The center platform extends outwards in front of the staircase to provide another dance area. At the tip of this area is a spinning platform that encircles an additional dance pole. Advanced performers can test their dancing skills revolving around a pole with this spinning base.
Aerialists can make use of the 30 ft. tall cage placed in front of the main structure. It is located over a ground-level dance platform where fire dancers, jugglers and a variety of performers have showcased their art.
